Charter Approved for Xara Garden School

Last night, Xara Learning Village Incorporated, a California non-profit corporation, was granted a five year charter to operate Xara Garden School as a California public school on our proposed terms, gift economy and all. This will be a K-2 school, and the first of four schools of the Xara Learning Village in San Diego. Ten weeks after making the Beltane Announcement in another thread here, the first school is authorized to open on September 14, 2009. Hey kids, we have a school.

Xara Announcement - Beltane, 2008 - New Fire

May Day, 2008

Today I am very excited to announce that the Xaraproject is morphing into new life, as a Network of Public Charter Schools. For the past ten years I have straddled between the art and education worlds, developing the art and myth of Xara while serving as a member of a high-functioning and progressive school board. Now, in this initiative, the art and myth of Xara become the vehicle to reinvent public education on a new paradigm for a new world.

The Xara Learning Villages will be campuses of four progressive public schools serving students K-12. They will be real learning communities and schools for *our* children, employing the best lessons of developmental, transpersonal, positive, and humanist psychologies, the best methods of brain-based, project-based, and problem-based learning, and the best practices of servant-leadership, all built on the gift economy and creative-and-community ethos of Burning Man. Here, the future paradise world of Xara will literally build itself in the children who will build that world.

"Project-based learning" is an important theory in education, with lots of people talking about it and a handful really doing it well. The idea is to learn information and skills in the context of doing something practical and engaging. The curriculum is integrated so all the subjects are being introduced at once, as part of a whole cloth of connected meaning. Curiosity and interest drive learning, and meaning is individually constructed by each student. This, in my view, is a far more *natural* way for the human animal to feed the appetite to learn. Its rhythms and activities are naturally suited to what we now know about how the brain acquires, processes, catalogs, stores and prioritizes memory and meaning.

The Xara schools will structure all this on a gift economy - an ethos of service as the measure of a life. Work is not assigned and due as in some commercial transaction. It is a gift of personal pride. It is done because it is part of something fun everyone is doing together, getting ready to share with other people at upcoming learning fairs and family festivals. Moreover, like Burning Man, the projects must do more than just show that the students learned something. They must teach it to everyone else, and must do so in ways that are interactive, fun, engaging, whacky - and effective.

"Servant leadership" is a big concept in management and business these days - the idea of distributed leadership and responsibility among those who will do the real work. We have been calling it "do-acracy." The Xara schools take the idea all the way to the beginning, using it as the governance model for the school’s administration, and *also* with the children themselves as the self-validating motive for all work. It teaches responsibility to self and others while linking those virtues to our best ethical natures.

The schools will live a culture of radical kindness, creating emotional safety and celebration of risk and gaudy failure. Belonging begets giving. The teachers play an entirely different role in Xara schools, guiding students to find the questions, rather than announcing the answers. Teachers will stay with their classes from Kindergarten through Second Grade, assuring best individual understanding, continuity and commitment. The educational approach will continue the best practices of the most progressive preschools, fitting them to the State educational standards, and adopting them to the developing abilities and challenges of older children as they grow. The philosophy is holistic and ultimately playful, rather than mechanistic and ultimately coercive. The teacher becomes an improvisational artist, constantly inventing on the fly to engage a child’s interest in the whole curriculum. Most importantly, the teacher is a learner right along with the students, a teamleader, and models the role, curiosity and competence of the life-long master learner.

The Xara schools will feature a curriculum of HEART/EARTH:
Humanities, Engineering, Arts, Research and Technology.

It will emphasize issues and careers in sustainable development, environmental studies, resource conservation and management, policy planning, and of course, the arts. The campuses themselves will be a showcase of green building technologies, onsite energy generation, water reclamation, and indoor-outdoor classrooms, as well as the Xara aesthetic itself of buildings draped in greens, flowers and hanging gardens. I want to provide onsite, subsidized housing for the teachers, and give them access to all the schools’ labs, studios and facilities to work on their personal projects - like The Brewery artists loft in L.A. across from the Smashlab. For the right group of burner-type teachers, it would be a chance to live and work - sustainably - in paradise. Others need not apply. School starts the third week of September.

Yes, we will take the State’s standardized tests, and the kids will march in singing. We will teach the State standards, but we will also teach the things that matter. Our students will be good academics and good workers, certainly, but they will also be good husbands and wives, good parents, good citizens, good sports and good company.

Students will learn Spanish, and piano, and yoga, and a vast vocabulary from the first day of Kindergarten. They will learn carpentry and cooking, soldering and sewing, house painting and oil painting, gardening and welding, camping and woodcraft, and first aid and automobile maintenance and circuit design. They will develop a Burner’s do-it-yourself mentality, and also the Burner’s disdain for the “storebought.” The visual, performing and digital arts are all core curriculum, and so is the history of civilization, technology and comparative religion . A core value is the preference for cooperation over competition, and the Xara Learning Village schools will offer no competitive athletics. But there is a formal curriculum in manners and etiquette, taught from the beginning and modeled at all times. Debate is reinvented not as an exercise in competition, but rather as an exercise in active listening, constructive engagement and collective problem solving.

The idea goes on and on in layers of detail and theoretical edu-speak. But it is all in this spirit. In a school governed by a committee of teachers, the “head” of the school for ceremonial purposes is the “First Steward,” i.e., the groundskeeper/gardener. Why? Because he serves most humbly and looks after the most slow and patient things. (See, e.g., the character of Leo in Herman Hesse’s “Journey to the East.”) Also because he is *really* the school’s credentialed counselor and plays the archetypical role of the Understanding Angel and child’s advocate. All of this plays out the lessons of creative mythology, while giving a physical life to Xara’s own invented myth of collective progress toward a happier, healthier, and more harmonious paradigm for living.

The plan is to open in San Diego in September 09 with Kindergarten classes for the Garden School (K-2), and adding a grade level each year thereafter for the Xara Terrace School (Grades3-5), Xara Village Middle (6-8) and Xara Village High (9-12) through 12th grade. I am looking to open another Village in the Bay Area next, and replicate success from there across the State, the country, and the globe.

The charter school consultant I am working with is a like-minded fellow (if you can believe that) who sold his software company and retired in his 30's to hang out, do good, and raise his kids. He said another school he worked with took the slogan “A new school for a new century.” He thought that school never lived up to the promise, but that the Xara schools are new schools for a new millennium - for a new epoch. I say, new schools for a new world.

What do you say? Doesn’t this seem like a promising approach to making the world better and more hopeful? Wouldn’t you rather see your kids in this school than sitting in rows waiting for the bell to ring? Wouldn’t you rather have them as your neighbors when they grow up? Thinking about it, isn’t it the most bold, audacious and direct way that Xara could actually manifest its paradise possible?

Mark
May 1, 2008
mark-hinkley@cox.net

p.s. Oh, and there is even a party at the end. The culminating activity of the year will be the Xara First Families Festival, an outdoor, camping weekend, fund-raising festival displaying student and faculty art and projects, and inviting the public to come play along with kid-centered theme camps and hands-on activities. You’re all invited for the first annual event, coming in June of 2010. As the network grows and all the Villages will hold their First Families Festivals at the same time, they will be linked and webcast to one another, and offer chances for interactive shenanigans such as Neil’s remote, pushbutton SpaceBar.

The premise of this festival, by the way, is that the future Xara civilization gathers once a year to celebrate and remember the first families who began the road to Xara - meaning ourselves - in a festival celebrating its own still-brighter future in the imaginations, creativity, and playfulness of its children. Myth, it’s not just for bookshelves anymore.

Love from Xara

Sandy called my attention to a couple threads on this tribe asking about the future of the Xara Dulzura event. I do feel that I should offer some kind of answer, because the whole festival had always been a collaborative dream. To cut to the chase, I really cannot imagine producing that festival again.

Some of that has to do with the neighbor problems and then the fire that burned out the monastery. Some of it has to do with the difficulties of producing noisy festivals at all. But the biggest part of it is the true-but-crazy fact that the Xara muse itself says the festival accomplished what it was supposed to do and needs to move on. It has actually been saying this since the morning of May 1, 2006, at the end of the last Sunday night of the last Floralia at Xara Dulzura. This continued and rose to a scold during the months we were preparing to produce the event in 2007, so that when the totally unexpected news of neighbor problems arose with the monastery, it came as a gift and a relief - like the work of invisible hands.

For better or worse, when I speak of the Xara muse, I mean it very literally. Xara has always come to me from somewhere else, delivered in finished words heard, and pictures seen, in my head. So much so, in fact, that I have come to think that Xara is a little bit real, reaching back into the present from the future, tugging and poking at all of us, trying to come into being. This is where the story gets really weird and is probably the point I should end it.

So what does this bitch want now? I'm keeping watch on the chrysalis, waiting to find out. It might be more accurate to describe myself as the chrysalis, feeling this new thing growing inside me - all bliss-y and winged, but itchy and impatient and uncomfortable. I am getting hints, but it doesn't seem like another XD-type event is in the cards any time soon.

Hello Everyone,

This evening as I was arriving home from the dog park there was a dog
running around in the street! I lured him back into the park thinking he
must have gotten away from his owner. After talking to some people they
told me a guy drove up let him out of his car and drove away!

He is a sweet pit mix, he hasn't had much training but is absolutely
desperate for people attention. he seems healthy, a bit under weight and
was desperate for water but seems much more settled after food and water.

Travis and I got a dog a few months back and can barley manage the time
and expense of responsible dog ownership. If it was possible I would keep
him but we just cant manage.

If anyone is interested please contact us. I hate to take him to animal
control but there may be no other option.

Call us (24/7) if you think you can help this lost little guy find his way.

Kisses, DP

new local arts foundation, with burner sensibility

We want to let you know about a new source of arts funding for performers and creators working in San Diego county: the Sator Arts Foundation.

http://satorartsfoundation.org/

Applications for major (up to $3000) and minor (up to $1000) grants will be available on January 18, 2008, for awards to be announced on May 17, 2008. In preparation for our inaugural funding cycle next year, the SAF is contacting groups at both the local and state levels, hoping to raise awareness of the new opportunities we provide. Please forward this announcement to any artists and performers you know who need funding, or to anyone else you think may wish to know about our programs.

"Sator" is the Latin word for "Sower," a person who scatters seeds. We chose this name because we hope to spread funding for artistic projects in the formative stages of production, especially those that have not yet received major grants from other sources. In particular, the Sator Arts Foundation dedicates its funding seeds or grants to the production of specific projects, in any creative medium, that interrogate the distance between "artists" or "performers" on the one hand, and "audience" or "consumers" on the other. We fund work in any modality that fosters interactivity, prompts people to play together, and enlivens community bonds through creative exchange. In so doing, the SAF seeks to foster the emergence of an inclusive local arts culture, in which the artworks themselves intrinsically authorize the community to interpret, to participate, and to engage with the creative impulse. Individuals, collaborators, and collectives are eligible to apply.

To find out more about our organization, or to download an application next January, please visit our website at http://satorartsfoundation.org/

In closing, we hope that you will find our programs of benefit to the community. Please help us by circulating this information, and this email, as widely as possible.

Rebuilding: Bjurts at Madre Grande discussion on SD Burners

I have started a discussion on the SD Burners site to coordinate part of the rebuilding effort at Madre Grande, namely, the construction of bjurts (a yurt-like structure, see http://bjurt.com). Here is a link to that thread:
http://sdburners.tribe.net/thread/ae468121-e31d-4df2-8697-628156d0c1e0?newpostingid=7ea3974c-3975-4072-ace0-f4930dd0eca6#7ea3974c-3975-4072-ace0-f4930dd0eca6

and here is a copy of the first post of the thread:
Greetings fellow burners,

I talked to Tracey at MG yesterday, and she is very interested in getting a few bjurts (http://bjurt.com). She is bringing it up at the meeting today, so I should know more in a few hours.

But for now, let's start with the logistics:

We don't yet know when we can get back into MG, but the most likely work weekends would be either 11/17 (the weekend before Thanksgiving) or 12/1 (the weekend after). If possible, we want to get these made before the rains start (if it's going to rain this year).

The goal is to build 5-10 bjurts, place up 5 on-site and the rest to other locals in need.

The main on-site resource will be ash, so we would have to bring everything else. There may not even be porta-potties, so we may be using camp toilets (I can bring a mini-bjurt to give privacy).

While this list is preliminary, here are a few things I think we need:
Event coordinator - Carl and I are working closely on the overall bjurt effort, but it would be handy to have someone run the camp (placement, food, water, public relations (talking to the cops)).

Generators

Extension cords

Drills and 1/4" hardened steel drill bits (I have one drill press and one bit, but we should have more to drill in parallel)

Pliers, hammers, wrenches (crescent and socket), files, and other assorted hand tools (I will bring some, but we need more)

Camping toilets (if porta-potties are not in place)

Shade, eating, and sleeping structures (I can bring shade structures (I have lighter structures than the bjurts as long as the winds are low) and we can sleep in the bjurts Saturday night)

Tables, chairs, cook stuff (I can bring a portable BBQ)

Tarps (we have enough billboard vinyl for almost 10 bjurts, but for the roof, silver tarps would block the sun better and may be easier to fit)

3/4" EMT conduit (I (Athena in LA, actually) am working on getting this donated, but it may not come in time)

Pins and clips (I have enough of these for the initial build, but I am going to try to get Fastenal to donate some)

Happy, hardworking people (10-20, the more we have, the faster it will go)

That's all I can think of for now. Please reply to suggest other things we might need or to let us all know what you can volunteer.

We will make this happen,
-bender

Madre Grande Monastery Fire - Please help !!

Madre Grande Monastery Fire - Please help

Hi all,

We've been evacuated since Sunday and are looking for help. Maybe someone on this list can help us. We can't get back into the area to see if our homes have burned or to rescue any cats that might still be alive.

Does anyone know anyone with an animal rescue organization that can get into the area to get our small friends? Does anyone know someone in the area or a firefighter that might have news about the structures at Madre Grande Monastery (address is 18372 Highway 94, Dulzura, CA 91917). Maybe even a local sheriff or border patrol? We know most people are busy with the current evacuation areas and their own losses, and we're being as patient as we can, but we'd love some help. It's been days and we really want to get our cats or at least have someone check on them. It's trying to go through this with no information, so please contact us at reservations@madregrande.org or call my cell phone at (619) 850-6936 if you can help - anytime.

Thank you in advance. We really appreciate any support. We'll let you know when we have more information.

Sincerely,
Tracey

Simone Forti "Logomotion Writing Workshop" \ project in residence

Caravajal15 residenza dinamica
Orvieto \ Italy
International Projects 2008

Hello!
We are happy to announce that Simone Forti will be again the guest artist of our residence, for giving her intensive residential workshop “Logomotion Writing Workshop”.
The intensive workshop with Simone Forti is in the ambit of our international projects 2008, and will be from March 8 to 15 2008 in the beautiful Etruscan city of Orvieto, in mid Italy.
The workshop is limited to 16 participants.
The intensive workshop will be held at the headquarters of the cultural Association Caravajal15 residenza dinamica, in the prestigious sixteenth century rooms of the Palazzo Caravajal-Simoncelli.
The fee is 400 euros, which includes also hospitality, reception and meals.
Application for registration is open from October 15th.

Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.

Jennifer Dunning writes in her 1991 New York Times review: “Simone Forti presented her first dance program in 1960 and has since then had a steadily increasing influence on post-modernist choreographers interested in exploring ‘natural’ or non-formalist movement and dance”.

Call for participation: Project Swirl

I want to encourage you to participate in my project for the upcoming burn, Project Swirl. Here's what's up.

If you pay an electricity bill, you're paying for lighting. Typically, incandescent lighting, the kind that's been around since Edison. It's not very efficient; most of the electricity becomes heat instead of light. For a long time, there wasn't much you could do about it. Which really sucks as you watch your bill get increasingly expensive. Even worse, the power plants spew tons of CO2 into the atmosphere for no good purpose.

But we now have a choice. We can replace the incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), a newer kind of bulb. They consume just 25% of the energy to produce the same amount of light. They last 10x longer. Plus they have a cool swirl shape! These used to be way more expensive than incandescent bulbs and produce inferior light, but no longer. The cost of a single CFL bulb is much less than the cost of 10 incandescents, not counting the energy savings. Which is really fucking cool!

So I began to replace the incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs in January. It's all done now; it cost a whopping $60. And this is sweet: I've already shaved $66 off my electricity bills. So the new bulbs have paid for themselves already! And they continue to save me money. Less CO2 goes into the atmosphere, and less dead bulbs get sent to the landfills. It's a massive win/win/win for everyone.

So what, then, is Project Swirl? Just this. I want to strongly encourage you all to replace at least one 60W incandescent bulb in your home with an equivalent-brightness 14W CFL bulb. It may not seem very significant, but here's the thing: if each of us on this tribe replaced just one bulb, then in a single year we reduce electrical demand significantly, we prevent 71,165 lbs. of CO2 from being emitted, and we pocket $7,042 for ourselves rather than forking it over to the electric company. All this... and only costs maybe 2 bucks per bulb... a cost which pays for itself in less than a year!

The project goal is to replace 1000 bulbs before the burn. If you replace any bulbs, reply on this thread or message me with the number you've replaced. I will track all this so we can know exactly what impact we're having, and report the final results on the playa. Participants will be commemorated by name on a sculpture I will create and show in the Red Light District. Details forthcoming.

Again: please participate! It benefits the world *and* you personally. It doesn't get better than this.

More about the project at www.acavallo.org

A Cavallo's stage will be equipped with tour-quality PA system,
monitors, drum kit, mixers, mics, and lighting to accommodate the
staggering diversity of talent found in Black Rock City. We're booking
about 72 hours' worth of performance, from singer-songwriters to
10-piece bands, cheerleader squads to bell choirs, and monologueists
to interpretive dance clowns, in addition to all the surprises we'll
find once we get out there. And hey, we even have outriggers for
aerial acts - a ring on one side, a trapeze on the other.

If you want to share your talent with the lovely citizens of BRC,
now's your chance. Please email Linus at littlelinus@gmail.com.

Xara 2008

While the magic of Xara 2007 could not happen, it can still happen, if we take our collective will and make it happen. There is quote that I like share that discuss the subject issue

"It's the constant and determined effort that breaks down all resistance, sweeps away all obstacles.”"

So the question we ask ourselves what is the barriers that are preventing Xara 2008 from happening and how we can overcome the barriers to ensure that the subject event happens. We can make it happen if we have the collective will to do so.

Xara 2006 is memory that is still magical to me to this date and it is "A moment lasts all of a second, but the memory lives on forever.”"
That is how Xara 2006 was to me

Please Read! Madre Grande neds help!!!!!

I'm sure most of you are aware that the neighbors of Madre Grande Monastery have been harassing the monks for some time now.
These are the same neighbors who hosted the Saddle Horny Saloon @ XD in 2006, the same neighbors who INVITED all of us at No Burner Left behind to come swim in their pond & the same neighbors who's nephews hair metal band played on the stage @ No Burner.
And the same neighbors who invited some of us to begin hosting events on their property.
The Monastery NEEDS ANY & ALL PICTURES & VIDEO of the neighbors: In the Saddle Horny Saloon @ Xara, in their costumes or not, anywhere else at Xara, pictures of them rocking out @ No Burner while their nephews band played on stage, pics of any of you on their land swimming in the pond etc.....
It's very important that we can get these images to the Monastery ASAP, as they have a hearing this Friday.
It's getting really messy (the neighbors called the police on the wedding they hosted this weekend, ghetto bird & all) and they really need these images to help their case.
Especially of their nephews band playing on stage.
It's so important, I really hope those of you with these images can take a moment to e mail them the images at reservations@madregrande.org
Thank you so, so much!

My husband Sam managed to capture the tornado on video on his digital camera.

After contacting Mark Hinkley to make sure that he was okay with us posting it (and he is), I've posted it up online.

You can view the video here: http://video.tinypic.com/player.php?v=2guyvbq

Please let me know if you have any trouble viewing the video, as I can post it in different formats beside this one, which is in Quicktime format.

A miracle at Freedom Fest

I have been witness to many miracles in my life, the most profound for me being the birth of my daughter.

But this weekend, at Freedom Fest, I had a constant sense that I was treading on holy ground. I was not present on Friday night when the tornado came thru, but I heard several people recount their experience and it is clear to me that one or more entities from another dimension saw fit to attend Freedom Fest and they had a very specific agenda.

Backing up... we all know that Freedom Fest was organized in the wake of the cancellation of Xara Dulzura, Floralia. In fact, the intention of the organizers was for Freedom Fest to BE a wake... a celebration of all that Xara has meant to us the past several years.

I'm a little fuzzy on the details of how Xara came to be erected at Freedom Fest. I heard that some individuals asked Mark Hinkley to let them take Xara to the desert. From what I heard, those individuals worked very hard to create a beautiful memorial so that people attending Freedom Fest would be able to experience Xara one more time and pay homage.

Little did they know at the time that they were facilitating a miracle. Freedom fest was meant to be a wake. But the Xara angels had something different in mind... a Xara burial.

I got a call Friday from a friend who had been merely 25 yards from the Xara construct when the tornado saw fit to pick it up and smash it unceremoniously to the ground and carry a large part of the contents far out into the desert. The tornado was then on a direct path to my friend's tent when it suddenly turned and side-stepped him and then was gone.

I arrived the next day and spoke to several people about their experience. Although there were many people there that night (one person was apparently trying to hold the Xara structure in place up until the moment it was destroyed), apparently not a single person was injured by either the tornado or the swirling debris. In addition, no damage whatsoever was done to any vehicle or property from the accounts I have heard.

Then, as if the tornado was not enough, the Xara angels saw fit to manifest a calling card... I talked to a few people who were driving in shortly after the tornado. They were awed to see a big, beautiful, brilliant rainbow. As they drew closer, they realized that the rainbow's end was Freedom Fest.

The more I spoke to people and heard the re-telling (and saw footage of the tornado and pictures of the rainbow), the more it became clear to me that a miracle had unfolded. We came together to pay homage to Xara; and with great care and specificity , the Xara angels gave us a beautiful gift... an unmistakable confirmation:

Xara has moved to another dimension. We were fortunate to glimpse the vision... now it is up to each of us to decide what to do with that vision. We no longer have a crutch. We have to look inside and find the Xara within.

I truly hope that those individuals who worked so hard to bring Xara to Freedom Fest are in no way saddened by the outcome. I hope they realize what a gift they gave us all. Had it not been for their efforts, this miracle would not have been possible in this form.

And Dan, you were a facilitator as well by allowing your property to be used for the festival. Thank you.

And, of course, thank you Mark for your part in creating such a vision. After this weekend, it's clear to me that you had a lot of help. But then... you already knew that.
Xara Dulzura 2007 Cancellation and Refund Update

March 27, 2007

Last Monday we announced that the 2007 Floralia at Xara Dulzura was cancelled due to a neighbor dispute. Since then, we have been picking up the pieces, cancelling orders and contracts, fighting about deposits on orders that couldn't be cancelled, and organizing refunds for those who already bought tickets. We asked people to bear with us while we sorted ticket orders and organized the refunds, but we also invited anyone who needed an expedited refund to contact us to ask. All those requests for early refunds have been honored now. We intend to begin mailing the rest of the refunds by this weekend.

It appears that if we refund credit card purchases through PayPal, it will impose another service charge, which nobody would prefer. We are therefore transferring funds from that account to the general checking account in order to mail physical checks for the refunds. I have deposited another personal check to help pay the refunds, and both my new check and the PayPal transfer are making their sweet time through the banking system. In the meanwhile, we are writing checks and addressing envelopes to be ready when the bank transfers clear.

If, however, there is some reason you want your refund credited back to your credit card and don't mind paying another service charge, please let me know at xara-project@cox.net and we'll handle the refund through PayPal.

Again, we are very sorry for the dissappointment and the inconvenience the cancellation of the 2007 Floralia may bring. We do note that a number of people have organized another event, Freedom Fest II, for the same weekend and we applaud their spirit. An announcement may be found here.
http://xaradulzura.tribe.net/thread/0e9b44fe-2be6-4e9c-a9c3-f5e50d5b60a5

A number of people have been asking about Xara's future, and this is a subject very much on my mind these days. While the Floralia festival format is retired, Xara is not done with me, not by a long shot. But for every good reason, we want to concentrate on unwinding the 2007 Floralia and returning money before we engage the projects that are coming next. Thank you for your patience and your continuing support, we look forward to rewarding them both.
Freedom Fest II Xara weekend

Greetings, all!

Still bummed about Xara being cancelled? Well, wipe that pout off your face and mark your calendars for Freedom Fest II, April 20-22 in Ocotillo Wells. This is a grassroots event of, by, and for the Burning Man community, an opportunity to reconnect, make new friends, forge new alliances and come together in a community effort. We're striving for a diverse, balanced event that has something for everybody, but
ultimately that outcome depends upon YOU, the community. So bring your art, bring your theme camps, art cars, interactive spirit, whatever brings you joy. 21 and over, no pets, please.

Personally I see this as almost a wake for Xara that was. We're hoping to have a good part of the original Xara installation there, as well as a stage, performance space for fire artists, and lots more. This is desert camping - not the luch landscape of Madre Grande - but it's a chance to bring many of us together who are now heartbroken about Xara.

Details and registration information will be forthcoming in the next few days, with the website up by Wednesday. Stay tuned.

Please contact me or Viagra if you've got art, performance or anything else you were planning to do at Xara and would like to contribute.
Greg (760) 807-1727 gregy1@yahoo.com or here on Tribe.

Xara Dulzura 2007 Shut Down

A new problem with the neighbors has made it impossible to produce the Xara Dulzura festival at Madre Grande Monastery.

The 2007 retreat is cancelled and we will organize refunds for those who already bought tickets.

This came like a bolt out of the blue this weekend, but by the time it came, it was already much too late. The monastery, and Xara in particular, were caught in the middle of a dispute between other neighbors, and the result is that they won't let the festival happen without pulling every string to stop it and shut it down. At its best, this would abate sound, eliminate gift kitchens, and impose access restrictions on the long driveway up to the gate. At its worst, a forced exodus off the mountain would be very unsafe and very unhappy. Even if we were willing to take all the new personal risks, we are not willing to put you in a position of risk. Xara Dulzura was always the dancing child of the monastery landscape, but that paradise is now lost.

We are, of course, very sorry for any disappointment this will cause to all of those who were looking forward to this year's event. The new art and new performances and new constellations of superstar hospitality projects were about to take us to new heights as a community and as individuals. We have been buying materials and building new art, eager to see the look it put on your faces. All of that turned to smoke in one telephone call, and here we are now.

Although it is really a separate story to be told another time, Xara Dulzura 2007 was probably going to be the last year Xara would appear in the Floralia format. Xara is leading me somewhere else now, and few will want to follow. Now, it appears that the last Floralia ended with the Beltane dawn in 2006 and a frame can be closed around the project to look at it whole. It was never finished, and that's cool. It had lots of warts and charming flaws, but it did invite a lot of people a little deeper into themselves. The first Xara Dulzura opened on the Equinox weekend in 2003, just as the "Shock and Awe" air campaign pounded the Cradle of Civilization and opened Bush War II. I thought the Floralia would continue long after the war was over, but I was wrong. Even so, as we reflect on all that we created together, at least we can really say "Mission Accomplished."

On the very day that all this hit the fan, the Joseph Campbell Foundation's Associate Newsletter featured an article about Xara Dulzura as an example of "Grassroots Mythology." The synchronicities have been flying fast and furious, but this one was especially poignant. Xara Dulzura died a good death in the morning, and received a touching eulogy in the evening.

Mark

p.s. We appreciate your patience as we pick our jaws up off the floor and organize ticket refunds. We know everyone will be eager to get their refund and appreciate that returning ticket money is the top priority. It will take a a week or two to get accounts organized so we can write checks and refund credit card purchases. If, however, you are in a situation where you need a refund right away, please do write to me at xara-project@cox.net and we will get your refund to you right off the bat.

An update form madre grande

To all the supporters of Madre Grande Monastery,

I know it’s been a long time since our last email to you, and we
apologize for the lapse. We just now got our email list compiled again
and have a server we can use for group emails.

Our first email to you is one of request, rather than sharing retreat
information. Madre Grande Monastery needs your help. A boundary and
easement dispute from our new neighbors has locked off our access
road, not only to all of you who come from time to time for retreat,
but also from the monks and residents of the land. Our ability to
continue to allow guests a sacred place of retreat for healing and
renewal is being challenged. This comes as quite a shock to us all,
and I dare say is a challenge of ‘keeping the light alive’ in a
chaotic time on our planet.

We are writing to you for three reasons. Firstly, we ask for your
prayers and powers of visualization to see us with all gates open and
the road unimpeded, just as it has been for the thirty plus years
we’ve been on this sacred land. Secondly, we are asking for financial
donations from anyone who can give – even the smallest amount will
contribute to all associated costs. Remember that it will come back to
you many-fold. Additionally, we are searching for an attorney who has
experience of right of way disputes that is able to offer a discounted
rate, a pro bono arrangement, or perhaps barter. This is a complicated
issue due to the history of these roads, so experience in these
matters is important.

If you wish to donate or have experience you can offer, please contact
us at reservations@madregrande.org We will find the best place to have
you send donations, as some of us are having to leave Madre Grande to
be able to continue our research and find an attorney. If you wish to
use Paypal our account is also reservations@madregrande.org

Above all, we hope everyone is in a place of peace, and we are happy
to resume our communications with our extended family. We will contact
you soon, when the doors of Madre Grande Monastery have reopened from
all the love you’ve sent our way!

If you do not wish to remain on this email list, please reply with
‘remove’ in the subject line.

In peace and in gratitude, we thank you.

Have ticket will travel - aka: Freedom fest here I come. Will be bringing the Mind melt for those who have yet to try it (very cool visual lights and sound-its like being on electronic LSD), also my new toy/a game that requires you to withstand being electrocuted (but ever so slightly at first), and of course bringing plenty of hugs and beer.
> Announcing Freedom Fest II, April 20-22, 2007, Ocotillo Wells, CA.
> This is a grassroots community sponsored event, with a wide variety
> of sights, sounds, and interactivity! Sorry kids, this is not a
> rave.
>
> Freedom Fest II is a 21 and up event, no fire arms, pets, or
> fireworks, no exceptions. This is a pack it in, pack it out, leave
> no trace event which will be strictly enforced.
>
> The first 200 tickets are $25, then the remaining tickets will go
> for $35 until we reach our attendance cap of 350. All ticket sales
> are advance purchase via this website:
> THERE WILL BE NO TICKET SALES AT THE GATE.
> Bring a printout of your PayPal receipt as proof of purchase, and a
> picture ID that states your age; no entry will be granted without
> these. Map and directions will be made available to all who
> purchase tickets, we will not be posting this information on any
> public lists.

BM 2006 video part 5 -Final part

Ok the whole freak'n thing is up finally... part 5, is burn night, of course... :)

got a hell of a lot more stuff to post just wanted to clear out the BM 2006 footage... combine that with the doc and I've got 9 years of footage out there! Exciting and depressing :) I think after this year (my 10th) I'm going to take a T.O. from going to BM, gotta take a little time off... not one to make grand declarations like some folk I know but maybe just a breather... everyone who has gone for many years says the same thing: "maybe we should travel somewhere else in the world?" the answer is yes, travel somewhere else AND go to BM or just travel somewhere else and think about BM next year.

anyway:

you can see 2006 footage at:
www.journeytotheflames.com

OR you tube:
www.youtube.com/view_play_list

next up: I've shot 4 years of Xara. Since Xara is no more, I guess a retrospective is in order.

Xara Memories~~

I've been fortunate enough to attend every Xara Dulzura event. I have some of the most incredible memories from each one. In the spirit of healing and as a tool to rise above our grief, let's share some of the moments that were most memorable. I'll start with a bazaar one:

At the very first Xara, I only attended for one night. I was still breastfeeding (Vicky was only a few months old) and Business Buddha and I both came out for one night each. My night was Friday night. I wasn't Sizzle yet... I was still known to all as SallyMama. Toward the end of the evening, I was sitting in the hot tub and my breasts were quite full. Somehow I started giving out breast milk shots... straight from the breast. It was a fun evening. I will never forget that.

Alright everyone, this will be a mass email for many tribes, but please bare with me.

So first I have to say. Starting tomorrow, we're going to get a hooper jam fest on the way. We're meeting at my house (4388 dale Ave, La Mesa CA, 91941) around 7:00pm to just jam it out something funky, with practice, skill exchange and all the trimmings. Please try and make it if you can. This is the first practice, so we're going try and feel out the size of our class and possibly move somewhere bigger as necessity requires.

Next. And please give me feedback on this!!!!!!!!
Baxter from North Carolina (the father of warrior/samurai stlye hooping) is going to be here from april 4th through the 6th. Him and I have been talking about setting up a San Diego class. I really need your advise (you sexy hooping bitches everywhere) on if we can make this possible. I have some space options, but pending on time (which baxter would like to have a 3hour block.) and attendees will make the difference of where this will be.

Please let me know what you think. I love you everyone and hope to develop the "SoCal Hooping Army" more and more everyday.

of these really are? I know I have. Are they just childish pictures
scratched
on the walls by Zuni Children hundreds of years ago? Or are do they have a
deeper
meaning? We this year we will find out. Max Power a former member of the
Harvard
Anthropology Dept and expert on these specific petroglyphs will be going
along on
the tour to teach us more about them and their history. This is a once in a
lifetime
chance, and it is all part of this years Toast! I hope you are as
excited as we are.

----------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever considered becoming a Black Rock Ranger on the playa or
at Toast! ?

Rangers are critical to the functioning of the Burning man event and to
the regional AZ events. We help resolve disputes, educate folks about
inherent dangers, and also coordinate emergency responses when things
don't go as well as planned, to name a few of the roles we play. More
information on Toast! Rangers, an Arizona subset of the Black Rock
Rangers, can be found at
http://toast-rangers.org/index.html

The first step towards becoming a Black Rock Ranger is to attend a
Ranger Orientation Meeting (i.e, a ROM) which will explain more about
what rangers do and how to do it. This is a mandatory step for both
new and returning rangers.

We will be hosting one of these ROMs at Toast! this year. There are
other ROMs across the country at different times, but the Toast! ROM
is a great opportunity to get involved with our own AZ community by
meeting other AZ rangers and by helping keep Toast! safe. Attending
this training will satisfy the ROM requirement for Burning Man 2007 and
also qualify you to become a Toast! Ranger, Arizona's own group of
rangers for AZ regional events. New rangers do have other
requirements, which I will be glad to discuss with anyone offline.

The ROM is taking place on Friday, May 4th at Toast!. The exact time
to start will be determined soon, typically 10am or 11am. It lasts
approximately four hours.

If you are interested, or have any questions, please do not hesitate
to contact me through email, and we can talk about all things rangerly.

Yours in Dust,

Blank

AZ Ranger Coordinator

----------------------------------------------------------

Stop in at 420 OffcenterCamp while you at Toast!

We will be offering chili supper on Thursday evening so people can have a
hot supper while they are setting up. Also, Saturday morning we are having a
brunch
celebrating the marriage of our beloved Alexa and Kenny.
We will be having pancakes and sausage and bloody Mary's of course!

Note from G, These folks cook up some really good food!

----------------------------------------------------------

The Amphibia Project is Toast Center camp for 2007. This is a community
based art project
and work in progress. If you are interested in helping create this or just
want to know more,

Do you have plans for Art or a theme camp at Toast and want others to know
what you are doing
and join in the fun? Drop us a note at gary@toast-town.org with details,
links or images. We
can put it on the Toast Website or just put a short note about it in the
next announcement.

Large-scale Sound Installations
Although Toast! is in a remote area, there are neighbors within a couple of
miles of this event. There are no geographical boundaries between them and
us to block sound. The actual camping area is located on an ultra light
runway, so the camps are not widely spread out. Because of this, Large Scale
Audio art is limited to one large sound system for DJs to use.

Please understand that the volume level is not unlimited; you must obey the
rangers if they ask you to turn it down. We want to continue to hold our
gathering at this venue. Keeping the sound that leaves the property from
bothering the neighbors is important to the future of this event.

Theme camps also may have audio systems, but please be respectful of the
volume level. The idea is to create a space for your enjoyment as well as
others. Please understand that your music is part of the event but not THE
EVENT. It must not overwhelm other camps' ability to participate.

As in the Past at Toast! there is a 3am curfew for loud audio.

----------------------------------------------------------

That's all for now!
Burn Toast and Leave No Trace!

I'm toying with the idea of driving down for Xara Dulzura in spring. This would be leaving Friday afternoon and returning Sunday night. The only thing that would make it worth it was if I could carpool with some cool heads and get the most use out of my truck. I can seat at least two more and carry tons of gear. I might even be willing to swoop somebody from LA.

Staff Recruitment for Xara Dulzura 2007

We have learned some things over the past four iterations of Xara Dulzura, and one of the big ones is that this festival is now too big to be staffed by our tiny crew of truehearts. Therfore, we are looking to recruit new staff members for the 2007 version of XD.

We need people to work shifts helping with: Gate/ticket taking, Greeting, and Emergency Services. Black Rock Rangers are warmly welcome with Xara Emergency Services, though we ask that they not wear their BRC uniforms.

Staff members will work 12 hours on a set schedule over the course of the weekend, Thurs through Sunday, in exchange for a free ticket. Shifts will typically be four hours long, but you may schedule back to back shifts if you wish to get it out of the way and get on with the fun of everything else.

Interested persons should contact me at xara-project@cox.net for details and to enlist.

Also, again this year, a donor has contributed money to provide discount scholarship registrations in cases of particular need. No one should miss Xara because of the cost of a ticket. If a scholarship discount will make the difference in benig able to attend, do not by shy and write to me at the address just above to discuss.

Alright, I can't contain myself. I have arranged some things for XD07 and am feeling very pleased with myself.

One of the physical changes will be to move the mainstage away from the Plaza, to be part of an indoor-outdoor complex with the Cirque Berserk circus tent. I'll shrink the plaza a little to make it more cozy and conversational and create a huuuuuge jungle entrance for the whole thing. The jungle will feature spoken word and video presentations, and crickets and birdcalls. I have been gathering recordings of really tasty brainfood to play from the trees - and - ta da! I've been arranging live speakers. So far...

Daniel is a burner and discusses BM in both books. He was on the Colbert Report a week ago, too. Breaking Open the Head was especially helpful to me, and Daniel has been sort of a penpal. I am really excited to have you hear his scouting reports.
The Red Book: A Deliciously Unorthodox Approach to Igniting Your Divine Spark
http://amazon.com/gp/product/0787980544
http://serabeak.com/
The front page of Sera's website shows her at the "Talk To God" payphone on the Playa. Trust me to never throw anything preachy at you, Sera is right up your alley. This is excerpted from the "sustenance page" of her website.

"Show your wack. Wave your freak flag. Bless us with your honest beauty and ugly glory. We’re not here for fakes. We’re here for the real you. So, let ‘er rip. Wide open. Wider still. Because if you never let your self fly free, messy and raw and real, you’re withholding sustenance for the universe. Yes, sustenance. You. Believe it or not, the universe gets off on you. No matter what you’re doing or not doing. If you’re holding tight, not being you, keeping your self stiff and contained and proper and “normal” (which by the way does not mean “natural”), the universe is sucking on dry air and preservatives and other toxic blehs and will reflect that right back to you. The universe can’t run on empty. So wouldn’t you rather give the gods and goddesses a juicy fortifying show they won’t forget? A show so bold and true and nourishingly yum that the universe can’t help but give your life a standing ovation? "

Amen.

Mark Sciscenti, owner of Kakawa Chocolate House
http://www.kakawachocolates.com/presentations.htm
Mark was recommended to me by two different people I consulted for information about shamanic preparations of hot chocolate. I'm working on a Xaran Hot Chocolate Ceremony as a community rite for Friday night. You'll love it. Mark is an alchemist/chocolatier in Santa Fe, NM, who researches and recreates authentic historical chocolate elixirs. I've tempted him to imagine the sacramental hot chocolate of the future, preserving all the plant and MOAI power of the cocoa in a beverage that's yummy to new palates. Mark performs trance-inducing cocoa ceremonies, talks on the cultural history and shamanic uses of chocolate, demonstrates preparations, and all that jazz.

Shamans, scholars, and chocolatiers... it's Xara, man.

DARK SKIES - THE SINGULARITY EVENT Press release for March 6, 2007

Hello Dark Skies –Singularity community. Got a few minutes?

Here is the latest news in regards to our permits and the BLM. Feel free to forward this public press release wherever you’d like.

THE NUMBERS.
DS/Sing is going to cost between $25 and $29K to produce. The initial draft of the accounting (pre event) is posted here http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/about/accounting.php it’s still pretty rough and is lacking a bunch of stuff, but you’ll see the nexus of what this takes. We post this in advance of the event because we want YOU the community to buy into this thing and see what it takes to produce it, and realize that nobody is getting rich here. And we want you to buy tickets too. How’s that for blatant honesty? It’s an extremely risky venture at best producing these events. Our ONLY source of income comes from YOU buying tickets to the event.
Anyway…..
BLM Law Enforcement (LE) is asking for $34,600 in LE fees for the May event.
Event budget - <>$27K, LE fees - $34k. See a problem here?

After being approved for the upcoming May event this past December, we have received a ‘Cost Recovery Estimate’ in February from BLM that is far in excess of the entire event’s gross budget.

WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO NOW.
We are prepared to file an appeal with the BLM in Sacramento and Washington to contest these fees, and concurrently file an application for a ‘stay’ to keep our permitting process moving forward during the appeal process, which could take up to two years. We intend to show that BLM is in error in its cost estimate for our little event, and further, that bias, prejudice, and unfair treatment has occurred numerous times at our events. Those of you who’ve received citations know what we’re talking about here. They simply ‘don’t’ like us’ but that has no bearing on the facts unfortunately.

We have a meeting scheduled with BLM for this Thursday here in the Las Vegas office to begin this process and attempt to talk some sense into these guys. I/E: How can you charge more than the event brings in for LE alone? Maybe we’ll just hire cops and not have any potties? For that matter, maybe the cops will let us s**t in their armored Chevy Suburban cruisers out on Roach Lake? Dunno. We’re pretty sure that we will prevail in this effort, and it’s a very challenging and productive time right now and a lot of work is going on behind the scenes on many levels to make the May event happen. This letter is keeping you all in the loop. This letter is pulling back that curtain. Many of you just want to come to the event, set up and have fun, and we love that and we love you, but many of you also want to know what’s going on behind the scenes too. Many of you find this process fascinating, you nerds.
That’s what this letter is about.

What does this situation mean? Is Dark Skies – The Singularity Event getting canceled? Moved? Turned into a Pentecostal Snake show? Are we going full on commercial and hiring the Chilly Peppers to pay for the cops? NO WAY! That will never happen. The May event is ON and we’re doing it on Roach Lake, May 17-20, just like we always have. What this means quite frankly is that we have to jump through yet more hoops in order to use the land that we own and pay for, from the Bureaucracy that we pay for too. We know our rights, we have the facts, and we have YOUR support in producing one of the best events on the west coast. And that feels pretty damn good guys. We also have some of Burningman’s resources now being brought to bear on this situation as well and we are extremely grateful for that. Additional resources are coming on line even as we speak. The reason is, that we are ethical and responsible; the facts are that we are in the right, and that BLM is simply wrong in trying to over regulate us and regulate us out of existence. BLM’s Cost Recovery Estimate is simply in error.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
What do we need from you guys now? What can you do to help? Well for starters, we are NOT going to start a letter writing campaign. And, we are not going start calling BLM and whining about this situation. Also, no picket lines or clown, bunny, or santa rampages at their offices either; it will do no good at this point, trust us. We need to work collectively as a group within the letter of the law and BLM’s regulations to find a solution to this problem. This is not the time for emotions, this is the time for clear rational action and we are about to do just that. Again, we’re not asking you to DO anything at this point except buy tickets; we just really want everyone reading this to more fully understand what goes into events of this type. One can only imagine the pain the Burningman has gone through in figuring this out over the past 15 years. Anyone who thinks this is easy should give it a try sometime. G’head, we dare you.

THE APPEALS PROCESS
Want some more info? Ok then, in the spirit of both community and true open source here is the basis for our complaint and for what will become the appeal should that unfortunate action become necessary. And we really hope it can be avoided at our meeting in two days. This is our rationale for appealing fees in excess of the event’s total budget. We allege the following:

1.	That BLM is over charging us for Law Enforcement for our event far in excess of that called for in other events of this type. BLM standards for ‘all ages family events’ are one law enforcement officer per 1000 participants. Our current ratio is 1/90. (see #7 below)
2.	That a history of abuse, bias, and discrimination exists and that our event is being treated differently than any other events of this type. This affects us adversely and therefore a stay should be granted to allow the permitting to proceed.
3.	That arbitrary and capricious standard’s are being applied to us on many levels.
4.	That we have a history of just one stipulation violation in four previous events on the same site, which was minor and promptly corrected. (fireworks)Therefore there is no reason to have three observers as part of our cost recovery estimate or stipulations. (see #7 below)
5.	That though we have complained in writing to BLM about abuse and dereliction of duties by LE on two different occasions, those complaints went unanswered and ignored and instead we find ourselves in the current situation.
6.	That BLM is attempting to charge us an amount, greater than the total gross budget of our event. This precludes the event from ever happening. This not only violates our civil rights, but that it negates BLM’s mandate to preserve our public lands for public use. In short, we believe BLM is attempting to regulate us out of existence and exclude us while allowing other events of this type to occur. This affects us adversely and therefore a stay should be granted to allow the permitting to proceed.
7.	That in our four events held on this site, and contrary to BLM’s own internal regulations, no After Action Reports have been filed for any of our events, and that therefore, this shows neither precedent nor reason for our user fees being increased for event number 5 by a factor of over 1600%. This affects us adversely and therefore a stay should be granted to allow the permitting to proceed.
8.	That the Closure area that BLM is requiring us to adhere to is 350 times larger than Burningman’s per capita. This huge closure area is completely unworkable for an event of this size. We wish to be held to the same standard as Burningman in this regard. Precedent has been set for these types of events. This affects us adversely and therefore a stay should be granted to allow the permitting to proceed.

As you can see, we’ve done quite a bit of work on this matter and we’re fairly confidant that we will prevail once the facts supporting these claims have been presented, and rest assured that we do have the documentation to back this stuff up. If any of YOU have anything to add to this please contact us OFF LIST and get involved. This is going out to too many lists (worldwide) to have public dialogs on all of them, though we would happy to discuss it on the main DS/Sing list which is here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/
And remember that BLM and LE is already on most of our lists anyway in case you hadn’t guessed. (Hi guys)
We’re not looking for emotional or hostile responses. This is not ‘fight the man’ time, but your ideas are certainly welcome and encouraged. What are we missing here?

That’s pretty much it. Fun reading huh?

GOOD NEWS
Now for some good news! We have over a dozen theme camps signed on. We have a truck load of art on the way from LA and we’re going to have a massive art gallery in center camp, (whoo hoo!). We also have major pyro and fire art coming in from all over the west coast, and tickets sold in 8 states so far. YOUR SUPPORT is the key to making this all happen. Thank you all! To be quite honest, what we need is to sell tickets and we have been selling pretty well so far so thank you for that too. The current count is somewhere around 180 tickets sold in advance, which puts us farther ahead than any other event we’ve done and well on the way to reaching our cap, which will be somewhere around 600 or 700 people.
Please visit our website at
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/index.php
to learn more about Dark Skies – The Singularity Event and to sign up to help out on site. Volunteers are the key to making this work so please get involved.

Thank you again for your continued support of YOUR southwest regional burn. Thank you for buying tickets. Thank you for helping. And thank you for daring to dream big with us and make this happen, in this wonderful venue, and on this level of both complexity and content. With your love and support, this is going to completely and totally rock. Because as we’ve always said since May of ‘05: ‘we just found the site, it is YOU who make the event so special’.
And you do.

Much dusty love,
The Singularity Core

Hey! I was wondering what the reasoning was for making this a 21 and over event? It doesn't look like the Monestary has any such requirement and as liquor won't be sold I was simply curious. My camp was thinking of hitting up some of the regional events this year, however we have some members that are 19 and 20 and don't want to exclude them!

Thanks for any insight!

...Madre Grande Monastery, after all.

Yep, we worked through some capacity, staffing and infrastructure issues and found solutions to return Xara Dulzura to Madre Grande, April 19-22, 2007. I thought we would be moving this year, but this is much better. We're really happy, the monastery is really happy, and I'll bet you guys are happy too.

There are lots of details for XD07 coming, but this is a great place to start.
